OtherWare Reviews

November 28, 1998

If you were to judge the Macintosh software market solely by the shelves at your local computer store, you might get a little discouraged. That's where OtherWare comes into play, since not all great software is shrinkwrapped. Otherware consists of Shareware, Freeware, etc. and can be readily found and downloaded all over the internet. The quality of the products often rivals that of their big name competitors and the prices can't be beat either.

Tex-Edit Plus:

shareware: $10.00
download now
(fat binary)

TE+ Script Archive

Still a bargain at twice the price! Tex-Edit Plus is a full featured text editor with many features you would expect to only find in commercial packages, such as find/replace and document conversions. It is also fully scriptable and with a little knowedge of Applescript you can create your own customized macros to speed your work along. The most impressive part of this app is that it delivers all of this in a very small memory space. This makes it well suited to users with older systems who feel boxed in by their lack of application choices.

I use Tex-Edit Plus to produce my html work and highly recommend it to anyone who would like to step up from Simple Text, but who don't need the bells and whisles of commercial "bloatware". Don't know Applescript? Don't worry! There is already an archive site on the web full of ready made TE+ scripts just waitin to be downloaded and put to use.

Monica:

freeware: $0.00
download for PPC
download for 68K

Monica is a simple app designed to do one thing and do it well -download files from the internet! Monica's queue based system allows you to download files in the background while continuing to surf without bogging down your browser with file downloads. Monica can handle up to four simultaneous downloads and will automatically retry any download which is interrupted before it is finished. There is even a timer feature which allow you to save up your downloads and to have Monica pull down those files overnight or whenever you plan to be away from your Mac. Written using Real Basic, Monica is very stable with a consistent UI which is easy to learn.
