Windows Software for Mac Users

November 28, 1998

We all have to do things we don't like doing and using Windows is just one of those things. That's why I'm taking the time to root out the best noncommercial software for the Wintel platform that I can find. It won't make Windows go away, but it may make your life just a little easier.

TextPad is the closest thing to BBedit that exists in the PC world. This app is full featured, flexible, and easy to use. This app is a must have for anyone needing to write code or process large text files in Windows9x/NT. Of special importance to Mac users, TextPad does support drag and drop editing which should make for a lot less "culture shock" when using it for the first time. Other important features include a search and replace function that supports regular expressions for faster editing. The app also performs file conversions and includes "clip books", which are similar for the extensions used by BBedit. These downloadable clip books give you easy access to proper syntax in several programming languages. The only thing lacking in TextPad at this point is a syntax coloring option and a built in ftp client, both of which appear in BBedit.
